Simon Knox

Simon Knox is a founding partner of Knox Bhavan Architects. He has been a practicing architect for 30 years and during that time has been responsible for the design and construction of a number of beautiful buildings. He has considerable experience as a Design Team leader, and has first hand knowledge of construction management derived from ‘hands on’ experience directing labour and subcontracts developed over a number of years of being based on site.

Simon has considerable interest and expertise in how materials work. His knowledge and work in timber is well recognised through ‘The Wood Awards’ and inclusion of his work in a number of best practice TRADA publications. His general interest in how materials behave includes timber, brick and stone detailing, castings (aluminum, bronze, and cast iron) and aluminum extrusion, and has brought an extra level of detail to the work of the practice.

Simon enjoys designing and making special pieces. He has designed door handles, hinges, moving mechanisms and specialist cladding. Designing furniture is a particular passion and many of the Knox Bhavan projects contain furniture designed by him.

His understanding of materials, and thus his ability to detail, is consummate, admired and appreciated by his peers, critics and clients.

Simon lectures about the work of the practice at RIBA regional events and is an invited contributor to industry events by TRADA. He has also been an architectural assessor for the Civic Trust and judge for the RIBA Manser Medal.

Simon trained at Portsmouth School of Architecture where he was nominated for the Presidents Silver Medal and qualified with a double distinction.

Before founding Knox Bhavan Architects with Sasha Bhavan in 1995 he worked with Penoyre & Prasad Architects and was a director at Edward Cullinan Architects.
